ARHA NEWS

The 2008 ARHA World Championship show is seasons away, yet the World show Committee, chaired this year by Brandon Sutton, is working as diligently as if it were just days away. The committee has a goal of making this the best World show yet and are making every effort to give exhibitors more "wow" at the show.

To begin with, the show has moved to the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro TN.  This facility features all the amenities to offer a truly "World" class show. The main arena is a spacious 150 X 300  climate controlled building with a sizeable mezzanine and state of the art sound system. A covered warm up area that is 120 X 230  is attached to the main coliseum and includes a fine show office, management office and sponsors reception area. Plenty of riding room is available with an additional covered arena and an outdoor pen as well. The barns house over 400 stalls with easily accessible electrical outlets and water. Also in the stall barn are several wash racks, a farrier work area and large restroom with plenty of clean showers. For those needing a camper hookup, there is an ample number available, and very near the barns. All these features are centrally located to each other.

The schedule of classes has been refined in an attempt to meet all exhibitors needs, and fully utilize all this outstanding facility has to offer. Look for the usual and popular social opportunities to be enhanced. Sponsors are already lining up to take part in what will be an exceptional event.  Thanks to them, the prizes will be one more factor in continuing to give the exhibitors the caliber of show they deserve.  Mark your calendar for June 23-28, 2008,  and come to the Tennessee Miller Coliseum with the highest of expectations- you won't be disappointed!  Come ride with us!  For more information on the show or sponsorship opportunities contact  606 872 ARHA.

Congratulations

ARHA and Big Horn Challenge Members
to Ride a Horse, Win a Saddle

The American Ranch Horse Association and Big Horn, Inc., are providing ARHA members with another reason to climb into the saddle this year. Big Horn is donating a new saddle to the ARHA Saddle Log Program participant who logs the most trail miles with his or her horse in 2007.
“ARHA developed the Saddle Log Program to encourage people to enjoy their horses and earn additional recognition outside of the show ring. The donation of a Big Horn saddle to the rider with the most miles is extra incentive for participation,” said ARHA president, Jerry Keeney.

Joining the Saddle Log program is simple! Just fill out the enrollment application and send it in with a one-time $20 fee per horse/rider. Once this is done, you and your horse
are  ready to hit the trails!

It’s as easy as that to qualify to win the Big Horn saddle,
certificates, patches, gift certificates, and other awards from ARHA. “Research tells us that there are approximately four-million horses being used as recreational horses. The ARHA offers a wide variety of options for these riders. We at Big Horn share in the association’s desire to encourage and support these riders and are proud to be affiliated with the American Ranch Horse Association,” explained Ernie Tracy, national sales manager of Big Horn.
Big Horn, Inc., was established as a saddle manufacturer more than 50 years ago. The company has approximately 240 styles of saddles for western and recreational riders that are available in local tack stores and through online and catalog retailers.

Formed in 2004, the American Ranch Horse Association promotes the abilities of the all-around versatile working horse in a positive atmosphere where western tradition is genuinely honored. Rapidly growing with more than 4,200 members, ARHA hosts competitions, clinics, and educational events throughout the year.

First ARHA Team Tournament

The always strong competition in the youth events at ARHA shows was turned up at the SKRHA show in Bowling Green, Kentucky April 29 & 30th. Twenty-two youth exhibitors were randomly divided into 7 teams of three members and the heat was on!

After the conformation and showmanship class, it was Team Number Two comprised of Julie Minchey, Madison Chitty and Robyn Moore in the lead. Team Number 3 consisting of  Carly Soulard, Katie Hayes and Jonathon Austin were a close second, with Danielle McCue, Brittany Martinez and Kendall Tuttle of Team Four in hot pursuit. Smooth moves in Ranch Riding by Samantha Knight and Whitney Markham, and some quick cuts in  the cutting by Alex Wieland brought those members of Team One in contention later in the day Saturday. Strong performances in Ranch Reining put Team Five with Laura Fischer, Ashley Nieman and Maggie Bonner within striking distance of the leading teams. At the end of the first day, there was only 14 points separating the first and last teams.

A flawless run in trail by Danielle Thorson, and consistency from Sheriann Gates, combined with determination from Helena Hattendorf put Team Seven on the map and a possible leader.  Everyone was keeping an eye on Team Six, with Rachel Gilley  placing consistently in all her classes, Abigail Bonner’s fancy moves on her gelding, and Kendall Tuttle and Trevor Clements giving it their all, no one could  count them out. After the reining, it appeared that Team 5 had taken a commanding lead when Laura Fischer and Maggie Bonner pulled a one-two punch in the reining placings, and Ashley Nieman looked strong in the barrels and poles. The other teams were not about to surrender though, and Alex Wieland’s blazing speed, along with good clean runs from her team mates put Team One as the over-all winners. Ashley Niemans, Laura Fischer and Maggie Bonner all had a strong second day of competition and were awarded second place over-all. Carly Soulard can always “cowgirl-up” when needed and fast times in her barrels and poles helped pull Team Three with herself, Jonathan Austin and Katie Hayes into a close third place    finish.

Congratulations to all the contestants on an exciting weekend! The Team Tournament brought out  the best skills and sportsmanship in everyone. Special thanks to B C Engraving & Sign Company for the donations of the plaques and medallions. Thank-You SKRHA for allowing the youth to use their show and to Erica Keeney for her help at the entry desk. Special appreciation goes to Carrie Dowell for putting all this together.
Be sure to keep an eye out for future team tournaments!!!!

To everyone at ARHA:

Just want to say thanks from one exhibitor at this year’s ARHA World show. As a person that was impressed with last year’s show, let me say “wow”, to your efforts at this year’s show. The change in the scheduling from three days to five days was wonderful. It allowed us to show with ourselves and horses more rested and ready to give our best efforts. Looking at the level of competition, it must have been true for everyone else too! I think the bar has been raised at ARHA shows.

If the bar has been raised on the level of competition, it was nice to see that the level of sportsmanship went up as well. I witnessed folks loaning bridles out to fellow competitors when they might have otherwise been disqualified and some loaned out saddles, (thanks Becky!). I saw people helping each other out, whether it was with physical labor, advice, or just an encouraging word. Maybe they knew each other, maybe they didn’t, it didn’t matter. Everyone was there for a good show, a good ride, and ultimately a good time.

ALL of the people responsible for putting on the show did such a tremendous job of making us exhibitors feel appreciated and welcome. From the time we pulled on to the show grounds there was a smiling face there to help with stall location and parking. The hospitality showed again at the entry booth where every detail was checked and double checked for accuracy, as well as questions cheerfully answered. As we entered the pen, Mr. Fitzpatrick and Mr. Weiand were there to make everything run smoothly going in and out of the gate. They were in a very hot, dusty, location all week, but never failed to have a smile on their face or have anything but a positive attitude. The announcers did a good job of keeping everyone informed, and added just the right amount of flair when announcing the placings. Arena B had the same mood of intense competition, but yet was relaxed and balanced with good old fashioned fun.

Judging is a controversial issue at best. I heard no complaints about the judging. There may have been some somewhere, but none loud or intense enough that I heard them. I believe most people are satisfied with judging as long as they feel the judges gave them a good look and an honest, fair, knowledgeable opinion. That certainly seemed the case with all the judges at this year’s show. Have you ever really thought about the job they had?? Can you imagine spending that many hours, for that many days, looking at that many horses, and trying to pick the best out of that many good horses? I think as exhibitors we gave them some good horses and runs to look at, and in return they gave us every ounce of professionalism they have, for five long days and through 2500 entries.

While I personally was unable to attend the dinner and awards on Saturday night, I hear it was a terrific evening. What a way to end a week! It’s great that there was an opportunity for special recognition and a chance to celebrate and reward everyone’s efforts.

The social opportunities were extra special at this show. The SKRHA hog roast was delicious, and the Merial ice cream refreshing! Not only were they fulfilling, I got the opportunity to meet folks from other states and ARHA affiliates. Recently I’ve come to feel that the horse trailer with living quarters has been a detriment to the “fun factor” in showing horses. At many other shows it seems as though folks show in their event and then run to the trailer to cool off or relax. At the ARHA shows, this does NOT seem to be the case. While there are plenty of nice trailers with living quarters there- people are out on the show grounds SHOWING. If they aren’t showing they are in the arena cheering on friends, or just watching a great cow horse run- thinking about how they will try that event soon.

As a group we won a few, lost few, went off pattern and crashed here and there. And while I’ve already forgotten some of the placings at the show, I will long remember the new people I met, the laughs we had, and the support and sportsmanship that abounded at 2006 ARHA World Show. Thanks again for everyone at ARHA for their work and dedication to making ARHA THE Ranch Horse Association and a place for people to come together with their horses, family, and friends in an enjoyable competitive atmosphere. My goodness you have been a success in that venture and the 2006 ARHA World show was just another highlight in your journey. Thank you so much.

Very Sincerely,
Carrie Dowell

Five Days of Competition Yields
2006 ARHA World Show Champions

Competitors from 15 states packed the WKU Ag Center Bowling Green, KY, June 20-24, for the Second Annual American Ranch Horse Association (ARHA) World Show. With 2,500 entries in the double-judged show, there was tough competition from Quarter Horses, Paints, and Appaloosas in halter, performance, and cattle-working events.

The change to a five-day format this year—over last year’s three days of competition—was welcomed by competitors: “My horse wasn’t as tired, and we weren’t as tired. We also had more time to meet each other and spend time with other people outside the show arena,” says Delza Noble, 2005 and 2006 ARHA World Show High Point Amateur Champion.

Judged by John Ed Tabb, Wayne Whitehead, George Fluhr, and Eddie Smith, top ARHA World Show winners include:

2006 Open High Point Champion: Majestic Money Too, owned and shown by Tina Davis of Cerlean, KY

2006 Amateur High Point Champion: Docs Chilli Breeze, owned and shown by Delza Noble of Mountain City, TN

●  2006 Youth High Point and Versatility Champion: Peppy Little Sport, owned by Dottie Sue Phipps and shown by Daniel Phipps of Mountain City, TN

2006 Open and Amateur Versatility Champion: Quigley’s Bid, owned and shown by Glen Flemming of Gallatin, TN

●  Ranch Riding Sweepstakes: Miss Leanin Hickory, owned by Steve and Julie Pipes and shown by Steve Pipes of Centralia, MO

●  Reining Sweepstakes: Chicks Smart Mate, owned by Faye Morris and shown by Gene Ray Stewart of Owenton, KY

●  Amateur Ranch Riding World Champion (against 42 entries): Mighty Abdul Lace, owned and shown by Angela Lewellyn of Bloomfield, IN

●  Open Team Roping’s Fastest Header Award: Poco Baldy Monster, owned and shown by Ty Batson of Brevard, NC

●  Open Team Roping’s Fastest Heeler Award: Poco Touchy Lady, owned and shown by Nolen Lanius of Gallatin, TN

Rarely did a 2006 World Show competitor walk away from
the ring empty-handed: Open, Amateur, and Youth High Point Champions were awarded trophy saddles, sponsored by Heart of Kentucky, and Versatility Champions won custom ARHA Gist Silversmith buckles and custom-tooled saddle pads created by Carries Custom Chaps. ARHA World Champion class winners received special-made ARHA Gist Silversmiths buckles, and Reserve World Champions won ARHA World Show tote bags filled with grooming products from Neogen. Several class winners received leather products donated by Rocking Horse Chaps, and more than a ton of Nutrena feed was awarded to ARHA World Show exhibitors. Ranch Riding and Reining Sweepstakes winners received crystal trophies sponsored by BC Engraving. In addition to class awards given during the judged portion of Open Team Roping, the header
and heeler with the fastest time each received $250.

Outside the show ring, the trade show featured more than 30 vendors offering a little bit of everything equine, including Freedom Dodge’s one-percent under invoice ARHA-member discount. The South Kentucky Ranch Horse Association hosted a hog roast for all of the exhibitors, and Merial sponsored an ice cream social.

“Horse showing is horse showing; it is a very difficult job when you haul as many horses to show as we do. The big difference here is the people! They make it all worth it. Win, lose or draw, you always feel welcome and like you have a friend in your corner,” says ARHA judge, trainer, and competitor Bill Black
of Spiceland, Indiana.

The ARHA World Show sponsors made the five days of top competition possible. Sponsors include: Freedom Dodge of Lexington, Equestrian World, Merial, Tourist Commission of Bowling Green, Heart of Kentucky, Neogen, Nutrena Feeds, Rocking Horse Chaps, BC Engraving, and Creekside Performance Horses, as well as numerous individual class and buckle sponsors.

The 2007 ARHA World Show is scheduled for June 19-23, at the same venue, the WKU Ag Center in Bowling Green, KY.

Formed in 2004, the American Ranch Horse Association promotes the abilities of the all-around versatile working horse in a positive atmosphere where western tradition is genuinely honored. Rapidly growing with more than 3,500 members, ARHA hosts competitions, clinics, and educational events throughout the year.

ARHA Youth on the Move!!!

ARHA youth were well represented at the 2006 ARHA annual convention.  Congratulations to all the youth members winning Honor Roll awards!  The theme for this year's award dinner was "Celebrating Success", but these youth members were not going to rest on last year's laurels.  At an informal brainstorming session, several ideas were brought up and are being put into action.

While the enthusiasm was high, several of the youth members donated their time to be auctioned off at a "slave auction" that night at the award dinner.  Alex Wieland, Julie Minchey, Madison Chitty, Rachel Gilley, Brittany Martinez, Katie Hayes, and Laine Fischer all donated some of their time and efforts and showed
what great sports they were while Jed Lawrence expertly read the "footnotes" describing each girl's talents and an occasional "vice".   Every entry "sold" and as of this writing, none have been "kicked back".   What sale can top that?

Future plans include a team tournament at the next SKRHA show April29 & 30th, and a balloon pop at the same show.  Be sure to attend the balloon blow up party- watch for flyers at the show.

The youth would like to thank the board members of ARHA for allowing them to have the "slave auction", Jed Lawrence for doing such a great job of promoting each entry, and every one who bid.  Special thanks to Danny Demonbreum, Randy Cope, Billy Bittle, Gene Ray Stewart, Faye Morris, Travis Crain,  and Royce Fitzpatrick for their generosity & congratulations on the winning bids!  Thank you also to Jackie and Tina Davis for their donation.

No doubt the youth are off to a great start to 2006!  Many adult and youth members have stepped forward and committed to helping this youth division grow and prosper, if you are interested in becoming more involved or would like more information, please feel free to contact Carrie Dowell at  cdowell@bbtel.com,  270 756 2295, or ask any ARHA director.

Another Show Season Behind Us!

A great big "THANKS" to everyone who sponsored or helped with any of the functions that our ARHA group put on this year. We all know what a big job it is to put on these events!

We want to thank everyone this year that participated at the shows. Each show increased in numbers of participants, and we think the amount of fellowship and fun did too. We are already looking forward to next year show season!

Please get us any suggestions that would make any of these events better. Our philosophy is one of making our shows a place to come, and have fun showing these wonderful ranch horses. Hopefully that philosophy will prevail through the next generations of Leadership.

As the new year approaches there will be a new slate of officers and board members for each charter. Please let your current officers know if you are interested in serving in any way next year or if you are interested in volunteering for an ARHA Committee. There lots of talent in our association that is going untapped, and we need to know about it.

The second annual convention is fast approaching! We hope that all members will attend the convention, and be present for the ARHA annual membership meeting as well as join us in all the festivities Friday, and Saturday evening at the Awards Banquet and Dance.

2006 Saddle Log Program

For the ranch horse enthusiast who enjoys the wide open spaces of the trails & woods, ARHA offers an alternative to the show ring, and a way to earn awards and recognition with your ARHA registered horses. All you need to do is nominate your horse, log your trail-riding hours according to the ARHA rules and you qualify for awards.

The purpose of the Saddle Log Program is to encourage  and reward casual, non show-oriented pleasure riding, and this may include competitive trail riding and trail trials. Due to the nature of this program, the logging of hours for awards is strictly based on an honor system for each individual rider.

PRESIDENTS CORNER

ARHA President's Message

Hello Everyone!

We are now into 2008. The convention was a great success. We had very informative meetings with the Charter Reps and Show Secretaries.

The judges seminar stepped up to another level this year. Our judges attended in a full day of reviewing the new rules and sharpening their judging skills. We feel this will help our judges to be the best.

The youth scholarship committee now has all the criteria in place and this information will be up on the web site very soon.  Don’t forget to purchase your raffle tickets for the filly donated by Lost Creek Cattle Co. and Ronnie Dale Rotroff  to be given away at the World Show with all proceeds going to the Youth Scholarship. The tickets are available through your charter representative and the ARHA office.  We are looking forward to awarding our first scholarship at the 2009 convention.

With the convention behind, we are full steam ahead to the World Show.  We will look forward to seeing all of our members in Murfreesboro, Tennessee June 23-28.  If anyone has a potential sponsor or a vendor they would like to see set up for the World Show you can contact Nikki Sutton, Chairman of the Sponsorship Committee or the forms can be downloaded from the web site.  If there is an area you feel that you could be helpful at the World Show, please contact Brandon Sutton, Chairman of the World Show Committee.

We always want to encourage our members to get involved by serving on committees, so if you have an area of interest send your name and phone number to the ARHA office.  It takes all of us pulling together to make ARHA a great place to enjoy our horses.

I am very proud to serve as President this year.  I have been with ARHA since the beginning as a director and truly believe this is the best  association because of the great people and their horses that make it up. I want to encourage everyone to get involved, whether it  is in the arena, on a committee or with the youth which are the future of our world. It takes all of us working together to make ARHA the best place to come show and fellowship with friends and new competitors.  I am looking forward to working for and with each of you this year.

Best Regards,

Randy Cope,
2008 ARHA President

ARHA Unveils Stallion Stakes and Three-Year-Old Challenge Programs

The American Ranch Horse Association (ARHA) has developed Stallion Stakes and Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge programs to provide financial and promotional incentives for ARHA breeders and competitors. This and other new membership benefits were announced during the Second Annual ARHA Convention in Bowling Green, Kentucky, February 24-26.

The ARHA Stallions Stakes and Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge are set up much like a breeders? classic or futurity, with money paid out for both events. In order for a horse to be eligible to compete in the Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge, it must be registered with ARHA and its owners must be ARHA members. In addition, the horse?s sire must have been nominated for the Stallion Stakes program during the horse?s two-year-old year. For example, an ARHA member who plans to compete his 2004 colt or filly in the 2007 Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge needs to have the horse?s sire nominated for the program in 2006.

The first ARHA Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge will be held in conjunction with the 2007 ARHA World Show. The Challenge consists of three events: ranch riding, ranch cutting, and ranch roping. The scores from the three classes will be averaged to determine the overall placings. The $200 entry fee includes all three classes.

The top three horses overall in the ARHA Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge will receive payback of 50 percent of the entry fees, divided as 50 percent to first place, 30 percent to second place, and 20 percent to third place. In addition, 10 percent of the entry fees collected will be paid back to the top three horses in each class, again divided as 50-30-20. Any added money will be contributed to the pool for overall winners.

For a stallion to be eligible for nomination in the ARHA Stallion Stakes and its get to be eligible for the Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge, the stallion's owners must be current ARHA members and the stallion must be registered with ARHA. Anyone may nominate a stallion as long as the stallion and owners meet these criteria. A stallion is considered nominated when the ARHA receives a completed Stallion Stakes Nomination Form and the $100 nomination fee. Nominations do not carry over from year to year; stallions must be nominated each year. Late nominations may be made from January 1 of the get?s three-year-old year up to 30 days prior to the Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge for an additional $100.

Eighty percent of the stallion nomination fees collected will be paid back to the stallion owners based on their offsprings? placings in the Three-Year-Old Ranch Horse Challenge.

In addition to these financial incentives, nominated stallions will receive promotional benefits through program advertising in the ARHA magazine and links on the ARHA website, as well as advertising and promotions in equine-industry publications.

Formed in 2004, the American Ranch Horse Association promotes the abilities of the all-around versatile working horse in a positive atmosphere where western tradition is genuinely honored. Quickly expanding with more than 2,800 members, ARHA hosts competitions, clinics, and educational events for registered stock-type breeds throughout the year.
